The preferred specimen for rabies testing is the entire animal body. Veterinarians may submit an alternate sample but should contact the diagnostic laboratory for arrangements. The body of any animal suspected of having rabies should be handled with gloves with special care to avoid the mouth and saliva. Wash hands thoroughly after handling a rabies-suspect animal.

The brain specimens are collected the pathologist at necropsy, and properly allocated for examination by histopathology and the FA test.
