November 4, 2009 - SPARKS STOPS SALE OF IMPORTED FISH
MONTGOMERY - Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks announced a Stop Sale on imported catfish and basa product from Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, China and Vietnam due to positive results for the antibiotic fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolones are not allowed for use in fish or seafood by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

October 30, 2009 - SPARKS WARNS OF POTENTIAL CROP CRISIS
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner Ron Sparks warns that Alabama agricultural producers are in a potential crisis mode concerning the fall 2009 crop harvest, according to a recent assessment conducted across the state. Prior to September, many producers were expecting to harvest a “bumper” crop and were very optimistic for the upcoming harvest season. Uncommon and unfavorable precipitation during September and October have degraded various crops and caused poor harvesting conditions, which caused the harvest to be behind schedule by around four to six weeks.

October 15, 2009 - COMMISSIONER SPARKS ANNOUNCES USDA SPECIALTY CROP BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM FOR ALABAMA
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner Ron Sparks is pleased to announce that the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries (ADAI) will receive $442,987.67 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Specialty crops are defined as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture. ADAI funding from this program will provide grants for 20 specialty crop projects. These grants are not to exceed $25,000 each.

September 24, 2009 - Plan Proposed to Help U.S. Dairy, Pork Producers
BISMARCK, ND - The nation’s top state agriculture officials have offered the federal government a new proposal, called “Meat the Need,” to help the nation’s embattled dairy and pork farmers. “The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) has put forward a plan to take extra dairy and pork supplies off the market, bringing up prices paid to producers,” said North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “These commodities will then be available through a supplemental food assistance program to people who cannot afford it.”

MONTGOMERY - The Alabama Peanut Producers Association (APPA) made a special delivery today and donated twenty-four pallets (approximately 25,000 - 12 oz. jars) of peanut butter to the Montgomery Area Food Bank, for distribution to other food banks throughout the state. The contribution will help needy families enduring economic hardships while increasing the awareness of the health benefits of peanuts and peanut butter. In addition to the Alabama Peanut Producers Association, various peanut-related companies and organizations are donating the peanut butter.

May 4, 2009 - USDA SECRETARY VILSACK ANNOUNCES NATIONAL ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM LISTENING SESSION LOCATIONS
WASHINGTON - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will hold a series of listening sessions on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The meetings will take place next month in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington state. "USDA needs to hear directly from our stakeholders as we work together to create an animal disease traceability program we can all support," said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

April 30, 2009 - Sparks Comments on Black Farmers’ Settlement
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner Ron Sparks says that promises made by federal lawmakers to help black farmers receive their settlements from a 1996 discrimination lawsuit with USDA may be hard for them to keep in the near future. Sparks says that he had serious concerns when the settlement amount of $100 million was initially proposed in the Farm Bill because it would not be close to enough to compensate the estimated 50,000-plus black farmers for their settlement.

The National Pork Board is now calling the influenza outbreak the H1N1 flu, aligning with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other government agencies that begun referring to the virus by its viral strain. Montgomery - Commissioner Ron Sparks announces the recovery of cattle stolen from Pike and Russell Counties earlier this week. Two Brahman bulls stolen from Pike County and fifteen cows stolen from Russell County were found Wednesday night after an intense joint investigation by the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries Investigations Division, Pike County Sheriff’s Office, Troy Police Department, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia.

March 27, 2009 - Sparks Comments on Possible Stimulus Help for Alabama
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner Ron Sparks commented on the possibility of the federal government’s economic stimulus package helping agriculture and rural Alabama. “I hope that the agriculture industry will receive a fair share of help in Alabama,” said Sparks. “Our communities, especially in rural Alabama, need attention and assistance after being neglected for too long. At the department, we are definitely keeping an eye on the Commodity Assistance Program, known as the emergency food assistance program, because it should be a priority to help preserve families during times of economic downturns. March 12, 2009 - Alabama Flood-Prone Lands to Receive Economic Recovery Funding
Auburn - Landowners in Alabama will have a chance to tap into the $145 million set aside by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to restore an estimated 60,000 acres, nationwide, of frequently flooded land to its natural state. The funds are available through the floodplain easement component of the Emergency Watershed Protection (EWP) Program. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 aimed at revitalizing the economy by creating jobs as well as protecting and restoring the environment.

March 9, 2009 - NRCS Announces Wetlands Reserve Program Workshop
Auburn - State Conservationist Gary Kobylski today announced the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be hosting a workshop to inform landowners and Tribes about the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). WRP is a voluntary program offering landowners the opportunity to protect, restore, and enhance wetlands on their property. Landowners that enter into WRP may be paid an easement payment in exchange for enrolling their land. To date, more than two million acres have been enrolled in WRP, nationally, helping exceed the Federal government’s 3-year goal of increasing the number and size of America’s wetlands.

MONTGOMERY - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks held a press conference today on a months-long sting operation that has led to a tremendous recovery of stolen property. As of today, fifteen counties in Alabama and one in Florida are part of the dragnet. The total value of recovered items so far is more than half a million dollars and includes: cattle, tractors, backhoes, ATVs, power tools, utility and stock trailers. The investigation also led to the discovery of other illegal items including drugs, moonshine, and untaxed liquor.

MONTGOMERY - Alabama’s only major league sporting event, the Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo, is set to come to Montgomery for its 52nd consecutive year. February 4, 2009 - 2007 Ag Census Shows Growing Trends in US Agriculture
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks and Alabama’s Agricultural Statistics Director Bill Weaver announced the results of the 2007 Census of Agriculture at a press conference today. The 2007 Census of Agriculture counted 2,204,792 farms in the United States through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) and showed optimal results for Alabama.

February 4, 2009 - Sparks Comments on Cockfighting Bill
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner Ron Sparks has provided comments on proposed legislation that would make cockfighting a felony in Alabama. HB245 states that it would become “a Class C felony for a person to do any of the following: Own, possess, keep, raise, or train any cock with the intent that the cock shall be engaged in fighting another cock.” Sparks supports the portions of the bill that state that gaffing, training and fighting cocks should be illegal, but he is concerned that the law will not allow a person to own, possess, keep, or raise a rooster on his or her property.

January 27, 2009 - Ag Census Data to be Announced February 4th
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks and Alabama’s Agricultural Statistics Director Bill Weaver will announce the results of the 2007 Census of Agriculture at a press conference on February 4, 2009 at 1pm. The announcement will be held at the Department of Agriculture & Industries located at 1445 Federal Drive, Montgomery, in the auditorium. Commissioner Sparks and Mr. Weaver will review the data from the census and answer questions from the media and the public.
January 26, 2009 - Recalls Of Peanut Butter Products Continue
MONTGOMERY - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks advises consumers that the number of peanut butter products on the recall list continues to grow. Since the initial recall in early January, more than 155 products from 50 different manufacturers are now included in the list of products possibly contaminated with Salmonella Typhimurium.

FORT PAYNE, AL - Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries Ron Sparks’ grandmother, Vera Kuykendall, is 100 years young today. Sparks shares the news of Ms. Kuykendall’s special birthday as a reminder to appreciate our families and loved ones. Ms. Kuykendall, who was born in 1909, worked in the sock mills of Dekalb County for many years and is credited with instilling a strong sense of family and a tireless work ethic in her grandson.

January 13, 2009 - Schofield Wins “Best in Beef” in Statewide Cook-Off
MONTGOMERY - Lyna Schofield was recently selected as the overall winner of the 2009 State Beef Cook-Off in Montgomery Jan. 10. Schofield was one of 36 students to compete at the state level. The students were split into four divisions based on their age and region. As the Lauderdale County representative, Schofield was chosen as the winner in the Senior North division. She also received the Best in Beef award which was selected from the four regional winners across the state.
