Summertime is here! Time for beach trips, laying out by the pool, and of course those summertime cook outs. Whether you’re cooking up some BBQ or just grilling some hot dogs, nothing goes better with those summertime treats than some of Katie’s Mustard Slaw and Relish products. Katie’s Mustard Slaw is the creation of Katie Kilburn from Florence, Alabama. Katie started making her slaw and relish products, from a recipe given by her mother-in-law, for her family and the local high school football concession stand. It took a lot of encouraging from her friends and family, but eventually she decided to start manufacturing her slaw and relish and begin selling it to the masses. With the help of the Shoals Commercial Culinary Center, located in Florence, she is able to make more slaw and relish for the rest of the state to enjoy.

 

The SCCC specializes in giving culinary entrepreneurs the facilities to make their own cooking dreams come true. When starting any kind of company there are always great costs involved, the cooking industry is no exception. To help cut down on the costs of buying their own equipment, the SCCC allows the cooks to use their equipment at a much smaller cost. This allows the cooks to focus on what it is they do best, making great products for the rest of us to enjoy.

 

Katie specializes in making two basic products through the SCCC; a relish and a mustard slaw. Katie’s relish is a low fat, low cholesterol condiment that can be added to any good summertime sandwich. The relish includes cabbage, carrots, peppers, and jalapenos upon request for an added kick of heat. All of the vegetables that Katie uses are bought fresh from a local farmers market. Katie’s mustard slaw contains many of the same ingredients and not only makes a great side, but can also be used as a dip or condiment as well.
