MONTGOMERY, Ala. -<\/span><\/b> Governor Kay Ivey has proclaimed October as Farm to School Month in Alabama, celebrating the vital connection between local farmers, schools and students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since October of 2020, the Alabama Farm to School Program has been given $2.195 million from the State legislature for the Farm to School incentive program. Since then, schools have spent $5,908,487.44 purchasing from local farmers, and they have served 14,332,643 meals featuring Alabama products.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Farm to School is about more than putting Alabama-grown food on the lunch tray. It gives students a better understanding of where their food comes from, while creating another market for the Alabama farmers who grow it,\" said Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Rick Pate. \"During Farm to School Month, we are proud to recognize the farmers, educators and school nutrition staff who are helping agriculture become a meaningful part of students\u2019 everyday lives.\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Farm to School Month is an opportunity to recognize and show appreciation to the farmers who work hard to grow food, the school staff who bring it to students\u2019 plates and the students that benefit from these partnerships. Throughout the month, schools across Alabama will host special events, classroom activities and hands-on learning experiences that connect students directly with agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe positive impact of Alabama\u2019s Farm to School Program can be seen in the numbers. They show how the program reaches beyond the cafeteria by creating opportunities for our farmers and keeping more food dollars here in Alabama,\u201d said Farmers Market Authority Interim Director Beth Spratt. \u201cWe want to sincerely thank Governor Ivey and the Alabama legislature for providing funds for us to incentivize Alabama schools making local purchases.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Alabama Farm to School Program, under the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, connects local farmers with schools to bring fresh, Alabama-grown products into cafeterias. The program supports Alabama farmers and strengthens local economies while also teaching students where their food comes from. The program also encourages school gardens, farm field trips and classroom activities that promote healthy eating and agricultural awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n
