OUR MISSION

The Alabama Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories provide diagnostic services for Alabama livestock and poultry producers, veterinarians, animal owners, and apiary owners.

A wide range of diagnostic tests are performed daily by the central laboratory in Auburn and by regional laboratories in Boaz, Hanceville, and Elba. Animal owners are encouraged to work through their local veterinarian when submitting samples. The laboratories are not veterinary practices and do not perform clinical services provided by local veterinarians.

The diagnostic laboratories provide diagnostic consultation, testing, and assistance for diseases in livestock and poultry, companion animals, honey bees, and wildlife. The laboratories conduct disease surveillance testing and provide educational outreach to veterinarians, the animal industries, students, and pet owners in Alabama.

The veterinary diagnostic laboratories are a program of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, Rick Pate, Commissioner (AGI Webpage). The laboratories operate under the general supervision of the State Veterinarian, Dr.Tony Frazier. The laboratories work in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture and the National Poultry Improvement Plan. The Auburn laboratory is a member of the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network.

The Auburn laboratory is fully accredited through December 31, 2027 by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). Our three branch laboratories at Boaz, Hanceville, and Elba are currently working towards accreditation as part of our mission to continually improve the services we provide to our clients.
